How Our Card Matching Works

Our quiz uses the information you provide — your estimated credit score, financial goals, and timeline — to sort the cards on this site into categories worth comparing. The quiz does not check your credit and does not guarantee approval.

Cards that fit someone with excellent credit are typically very different from those used by someone rebuilding credit, so the categories shown depend on the answers you select.

What We Sort By

  • Credit profile fit — We point to card categories commonly considered for the credit range you select.
  • Reward angle — Cash back, travel, balance transfer, and credit-building cards each show up under different goals.
  • Fee structure — Annual fees, foreign transaction fees, and penalty APRs are listed inside each card review.
  • Cardholder perks — Sign-up bonuses, purchase protection, and travel benefits are summarized inside each card listing.

Tips Before You Apply

Getting the most out of a new credit card starts before you even submit an application. Here are a few steps that improve your chances and help you choose wisely.

Check Your Credit Report First

You're entitled to a free credit report from each of the three major bureaus once per year through AnnualCreditReport.com. Review yours for errors — incorrect balances, accounts you don't recognize, or outdated negative marks. Disputing errors can raise your score before you apply.

Keep Your Utilization Low

Credit utilization — the percentage of your available credit you're using — is one of the biggest factors in your score. Try to keep it below 30%, and ideally under 10%, in the months before applying for a new card.

Don't Apply for Too Many Cards at Once

Each application generates a hard inquiry. Spacing applications out by at least 3–6 months reduces the impact on your score and avoids looking like a risk to issuers.
