About Our Ratings

How we evaluate and score every credit card on TopPicks PointsPro.

Our 5-Star Rating Methodology

Every credit card on TopPicks PointsPro is evaluated using a consistent, objective methodology. Our editorial team scores each card across five key factors, and the final star rating reflects a weighted average of these scores. This process ensures that our ratings are fair, comparable, and useful for consumers at every credit level.

Rating Factors

1. Reward Value (30%)

We calculate the estimated first-year value of each card's rewards program based on typical spending patterns. This includes cash back percentages, points-per-dollar earnings, sign-up bonus value, and any category multipliers. Cards with higher real-dollar reward value score higher in this category.

2. Fee Structure (25%)

We evaluate annual fees, balance transfer fees, foreign transaction fees, late payment penalties, and any other charges. Cards with no annual fee or fees that are clearly offset by the card's benefits score highest. We also consider whether fees change after the first year.

3. Approval Accessibility (20%)

We assess how accessible each card is across different credit profiles. Cards that serve a wide range of credit scores — or that fill an underserved niche like thin-file or rebuilding credit — receive higher scores. We also factor in whether the issuer offers pre-qualification without a hard inquiry.

4. Cardholder Benefits (15%)

Beyond rewards, we evaluate additional perks: purchase protection, extended warranties, travel insurance, airport lounge access, cell phone protection, identity theft monitoring, and free credit score access. Cards with a richer benefits package score higher.

5. Customer Satisfaction (10%)

We review publicly available customer satisfaction data, including J.D. Power rankings, CFPB complaint data, and user reviews. Issuers with strong customer service reputations and low complaint rates contribute to higher scores in this category.

How Scores Are Calculated

Each factor receives a score from 1 to 5. These scores are multiplied by their respective weights and summed to produce a final weighted average, which is rounded to the nearest half-star for display. For example, a card scoring 4 in Reward Value, 5 in Fee Structure, 3 in Approval Accessibility, 4 in Benefits, and 4 in Satisfaction would receive:

(4 × 0.30) + (5 × 0.25) + (3 × 0.20) + (4 × 0.15) + (4 × 0.10) = 4.05 → 4 stars

Update Frequency

Our ratings are reviewed and updated monthly. When card issuers change terms, launch new promotions, adjust fee structures, or when new customer satisfaction data becomes available, we re-evaluate the affected cards and update their ratings accordingly. The date of the most recent review is noted on each card listing where applicable.

Independence

Our ratings are produced by our editorial team and are not influenced by advertising relationships. Whether or not we receive compensation from a card issuer has no bearing on the rating a card receives. For more details on how we earn revenue, see our Advertiser Disclosure.
